Jevon Kearse Avoids DUI, Pleads to Reckless Driving

First Jevon Kearse got his DUI charges delayed until after the season, now he’s avoided the worst of possible sanctions by plea bargaining to a reckless driving charge, as the Tennessean reported.

Instead of a DUI, Kearse had to pay a $350 fine (which works out to be the equivalent of a couple of pennies for your or me), faces six months probation and must go through an NFL alcohol program. He’ll also have a restricted license for the next year, which comes from the fact that he refused to take a DUI breath test.

In Kearse’s case, he seems to be a poster child for not taking the breath test. Instead of a DUI charge that would have likely carried jail time and an NFL suspension, he’s got a pretty decent chance of avoiding the NFL suspension now, as reckless driving is not usually something that the NFL clamps down on.

Kearse had a pretty solid bounce back season in his return to Tennessee. Most importantly, he was healthy all year–he played in all 16 games for the first time since 2001. And since he’s under contract for only $3 million for 2009, it’s likely he’ll be back with Tennessee next season
